Side Effects of VIMOVO

VIMOVO is a prescription osteoarthritis pain reliever that can also help to avoid some stomach issues common to NSAIDs. As with any prescription medication, it's important to talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of treatment with VIMOVO.

Understanding the risks of VIMOVO treatment

All prescription NSAIDs, including VIMOVO, may increase the chance of heart attack or stroke, which can lead to death. This chance increases

  • If you have heart disease
  • If you take NSAIDs for a long time

NSAID-containing medications, such as VIMOVO, should never be used before or after a type of heart surgery called coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).

Stomach and intestine problems and serious skin reactions can occur without warning. With any of these medications, people also taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach and intestinal bleeding and ulcers.

Who should not take VIMOVO

  • If you have had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergic reaction with aspirin or any other NSAID
  • For pain right before or after heart bypass surgery
  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in VIMOVO or any other proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medicine
  • If you are in the late stages of pregnancy (third trimester)

What to discuss with your doctor before taking VIMOVO

  • All of your medical conditions, including kidney or liver problems
  • All of the medicines you take, even over-the-counter medications. NSAIDs and some other medicines can interact with each other and cause serious side effects
  • If you have been told that you have low magnesium levels in your blood
  • If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. NSAIDs should not be used by pregnant women late in their pregnancy
  • If you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease (inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD)
